    1 Hotel Toronto

Just opened in the summer of 2021, sustainability shines at this 1 Hotel property in Toronto—the first in Canada—with a dining experience heavy on local offerings, a number of restorative activities and lots of creative eco-minded details (like a bee hotel!) weaved throughout.

    Location:

It’s easy to dive into the sustainable culture of this lux hotel right from the get-go, thanks to its central setting, which gives you the opportunity to explore a whole swath of Toronto on foot. In about 15 minutes or less, you can get to the waterfront, Queen’s Street West, and more, with the CN Tower at just 20 minutes out. And while you can’t walk from the airport, it’s just a quick half-hour car ride away. Also great? For adventures further outside the hotel’s spot in the King West Village area, book a ride in the hotel’s electric Audi e-tron.

    Vibe:

As we’ve mentioned 1 Hotels are known for their eco-friendly vibe, and their Toronto property is infused with that same feeling. Designed by architect and designer David Rockwell of the New York-based Rockwell Group, the hotel has 112 rooms, with 21 suites, some of which include their own private terraces. Expect a neutral color palette, soothing wood tones, and amenities like organic bedding and in-room yoga mats. The two largest suites include the Willow House, with a kitchen and living room, and the 3,150-square foot, two-bedroom Birch House, which accommodates up to six and boasts living and dining rooms, as well as a kitchen.

    Why We Love It:

Toronto is such a vibrant city—and being so close to so much is a definite upside to staying at this hotel. Another? The great dining scene right on property, helmed by executive chef Derek Powers Jr., who is “focused on crafting delicious zero-waste dishes that showcase the hotel’s commitment to preserving the beauty and bounty of nature,” as they describe. Currently, there are three dining and drinking options open, with two more in the works, including a rooftop lounge. There’s a big focus on local here, and—fun fact—at the open-all-day 1 Kitchen, all the ingredients come from no more than 50 km away from the restaurant. Next up, when it’s time for some self-care, consider The Field House, the hotel’s in-house gym, or one of their group classes, like HIIT or running. (There’s personal training, too.) If your version of self-care is more of the relaxation variety, the rooftop pool doesn’t disappoint—nor does the glass of champagne you can order while there. And then, of course, there’s the sustainability piece, which is evident here in spades. A few examples: There’s a “bee hotel” for native bees and pollinators, 1 Kitchen is totally zero-waste, the on-site organic composter helps redirect waste to area plants, and much of the wooden furniture was made by a local designer using fallen trees.

    Why You Should Go F1RST:

If you book with First in Service, you’ll receive a daily breakfast credit of $60 to use at 1 Kitchen and a $100 food and beverage credit to use anywhere at the hotel, along with other amenities, if available, like a room upgrade and early check-in/late check-out.
